Staying Safe

Chances are, you'll have a fantastic and memorable experience abroad, but for those who don't, it's usually a result of poor planning. Common sense and familiarity with the culture with which you'll be integrating are key elements in maintaining your personal safety when you're half a world away from home.

Keep abreast of the news
There's a lot going on in the world, and things can change frequently. Even if you're heading to a relatively safe part of the world, check for official Travel Warnings issued by the U.S. Department of State and keep an eye on the news. This is particularly important if you're headed to an area known for civil unrest or political turmoil.

When in Rome…
Familiarize yourself with the culture of the country where you're going, and be respectful of it. Don't be the ""ugly American"" by assuming that the rest of the world will speak English and be enchanted by your mannerisms and behavior. If you're a woman, be especially cautious in some countries. American women are often portrayed as promiscuous in some foreign media and a friendly smile or even brief eye contact can be misconstrued as flirtatious.

Dress to blend in, not stick out — a conservative approach is the best. And pay attention to how the locals dress and behave. Before long, you'll fit in great.

Tow the line
Just as clothing and behavior is different in other countries, so are the laws. Americans are accustomed to pretty liberal civil rights.
